ProLiner PP30: Value pay-off with PP30 - an innovation for development strategy
With a 60 million euro turnover and annual production of 90 million containers, SACI Industrie Spa is one of the top Italian producers of liquid detergents. Like many Italian companies, SACI Industrie has its origins as a family business. The Campanile family still heads the company’s management, but today SACI has the size and structure of a true industrial.
In mature product sectors like detergents, innovation is a key factor but is mainly limited to processes and logistics. Labelling is an important part of the finished product, and the choice of label supplier and materials is fundamental. The adoption of ProLiner PP30 as a backing for SACI Industrie’s detergent label production is an integral part of the firm’s development strategy.
“We invest huge resources in packaging planning, a strategic element for the success of a detergent. The packaging must be efficient from a production and logistical point of view, and must also be forward-looking in terms of eco-compatibility. In the planning phase, materials savings and process optimisation are the priority,” explains Filippo Campanile, CEO of SACI Industrie.
Recycling the liner waste locally
In April 2011, SACI Industrie approved a proposal from its label supplier Etiservice Pomezia to introduce labels with the ProLiner PP30 backing. SACI Industrie uses hundreds of millions of labels each year, and the idea of diversifying the backings they use was welcomed by the company’s management.
“We were delighted to introduce labels printed on ProLiner PP30, since our company has always been oriented towards sustainable packaging and environmentally sound processes. This material perfectly addresses our sustainability requirements,” Campanile adds.
“Through UPM Raflatac we also made contact with Ecoplast, a local recycler that supplies us with special containers for collecting the used liner and pays us a significant fee for every tonne of material collected.”
SACI Industrie was able to introduce ProLiner PP30 on its packing lines without making any changes. Another benefit lies in the technical features, as ProLiner backing is 50% thinner than siliconized paper, which means that for the same spool diameter it holds about 20% more labels.
Despite being thinner, ProLiner is also stronger and dramatically reduces machine downtime related to backing failure.
Competitive advantage for value chain partners
Etiservice Pomezia, one of SACI Industrie’s partners, specialises in the production of self-adhesive labels and coupons. Owner Corrado Costantino demonstrated the advantages of ProLiner PP30 in label printing.
“We were able to introduce ProLiner PP30 thanks to the relationship we’ve built over time with UPM Raflatac; we performed the initial trials with them and got the results we were expecting,” Costantino explains.
One benefit that really enhances label production with ProLiner PP30 is the improved print quality that comes from a more uniform adhesive profile on the filmic backing. In addition, ProLiner PP30 requires less tension on-machine, ensuring greater stability; when added to the capability of 6000 metre roll lengths, for us this translates into a productivity increase of 10%.
According to Costantino, ProLiner PP30 can offer a competitive advantage for printers and the process efficiency benefits which are even greater at very high output rates.
Concludes Stefano Pistoni, Regional Sales Manager at UPM Raflatac Italy: “ProLiner PP30 allows our customers to promote a product that really adds value without devaluing the label. From the end-user’s point of view, ProLiner PP30 offers a competitive advantage centred on greater production efficiency and the responsible recovery of waste material.”
